The fact that leather is mostly the by-product of the meat industry, has often been debated. Yes, it is true that leather comes from a sustainable, naturally renewable, raw material – the hides and skins of animals. But the difference between sustainable and unsustainable leather lies in how the leather is processed.

 

To be sustainable, the manufacturing process of leather, must be able to justify the inputs vs. output situation. During the tanning process, use of chemicals, water waste, energy and more, must be measured against the outputs of manufacturing, such as air emissions, water pollution, carbon emissions, and solid waste production. If the equation is unbalanced, we are most definitely staring at unsustainable practices. Fortunately, modern tanning practices have brought much needed sustainability, to the leather industry!

 

At HMade Collective, we are passionate about creating high-quality leather designs that are consciously sourced and sustainable. We craft our leather from start to finish, including tanning, cutting, and stitching, all done by local artisans in India.
